The Biosphere is at the centre of a £1.1bn life science eco-system and the North East is home to more than 200 life science companies who employing more than 7,000 people.

Our region has built a global reputation as a UK hotspot for clinical trials and we are one of the strongest regions in the UK for exports of medical and pharmaceutical products, with our commercial base underpinned by a broad range of expertise in biotechnology and novel therapeutics. Assets that support the entire bench to bedside pathway, are all within a hours’ drive of our laboratories.

NHS Hospital Trust and Clinical Commission Groups (CCG)

Within the North East and North Cumbria network, covered by our Academic Health Science Network, you will find 11 Trusts and 11 Clinical Commission Groups.  The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been providing patient-centred healthcare to communities in the North East of England and beyond for more than 250 years. They are one of the largest NHS trusts in the UK, with more specialist services than any other group of hospitals outside London.  They have been rated ‘outstanding’ for a second time, being just 1 of 5 in the country to get this rating twice

World leading research

Newcastle University is one of 24 UK Russell Group research-intensive universities.  A global top 100 university for life sciences and a centre of excellence for pre-clinical contract research.

The Leiden Ranking 2020 places them 78th in the world, scoring particularly highly in Biomedical and Health Sciences, where it ranked 39th globally. As well as contributing to our talent pool, the universities are engaged in various industry collaborations and spin-out programmes.

Centre for Process Innovation (CPI)

Our region is home to CPI, who cultivate innovation in the UK’s life science industry. They act as a catalyst for bringing together academia, businesses, government, and investors to translate bright ideas and research into the marketplace. They do this by giving access to the right experts, equipment, networks, funding to support effective innovation.

International Centre for Life

The International Centre for Life was established in 2000, where clinicians are pioneering science, particularly in the fields of genetics and fertility treatment, leading with the first three-parent IVF treatment.
